Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
Completed in 2011, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is one of the latest additions to the National Mall and only one of four memorials dedicated to someone other than a U.S. President. The memorial features a 30 ft granite stone carving of Dr. King known as the Stone of Hope. The Dr. King Stone of Hope is flanked by two additional pillars of granite. Famous quotes from Dr. King are inscribed in a 450 wall that form a semi-circle around the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is located on the east side of the tidal basin roughly halfway between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. Visitors walking from the Lincoln Memorial to the Jefferson Memorial along the tidal basin will pass through the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. The memorial is also very close to the District of Columbia War Memorial.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is open 24/7 365 days a year and is illuminated at night. As with the entire tidal basin area, the busiest season is during the blooming of the cherry blossoms in late March or early April.
