Scheduled to open in 2016, the NMAAHC is the latest addition to the Smithsonian Institution’s museums on the National Mall. Located between the Natural History Museum and the Washington Monument, the museum will consist of five above ground and three below ground floors. The museum has received widespread support including $12 million from Oprah.
Artifacts on display will include items such as Harriet Tubman’s personal effects, Muhammad Ali’s headgear, Louis Armstrong’s trumpet, Rosa Park’s dress, Nat Turner’s bible, and President Obama’s 2008 campaign office. The NMAAHC, Museum of American History, and the Thomas Jefferson Society opened an exhibit titled “Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello” in 2012.
